Can You Survive a stock Market Crash ?

We're talking very simple, common sense rules to remember in a market crash like: •I am a long-term investor and I know the stock market always comes back. I will sleep secure knowing history is on my side. •I will remember to sell high and buy low. If the market crashes, I will move money from cash equivalents (Treasuries, etc.) into stocks with every 50-point drop in the Dow or five-point drop in the S&P 500. (Do the reverse when the market hits new record highs.) [And remember, those were 1995 benchmarks. Adjust accordingly for 2013.] •I will make sure anything I buy was hit by the decline. In other words, I won't buy anything that didn't go down, because it probably won't go up. I want to use a big market break to buy quality stocks cheaply. •I will not read, listen to or believe negative stories during the crash. I know things are never as good as they seem when you're winning, and never as bad as they seem when you're losing. The blessed media will probably be uniformly negative if we have a real barn burner of a crash. The obvious question: Given the nature of the markets, with high-frequency trading, the emergence of ETFs and an overall different market characteristic than 18 years ago, do the same rules apply today?

Secondly, boring, old energy and materials companies were well-represented on the list. This might be a good thing to remember the next time a shiny social networking IPO dominates the news coverage for several months.

Finally, when looking for the best stocks of the next decade, be on the lookout for meaningful trends. Some trends -- like the increasing use of the Internet for buying goods and services -- might be quite obvious. Other trends, however -- like the long-term shift to nitrogen fertilizers, which helped Terra Nitrogen (NYSE: TNH ) make our list -- may not be so obvious.

There isn't, alas, some facile formula for finding the great stocks of the future. With discipline, imagination, and perhaps a bit of luck, it might be possible, however, to discover big winners that can turbocharge the overall returns of your portfolio.

One big question on a lot of investors' minds is whether Apple can continue its remarkable run. In our latest premium report, The Motley Fool's senior technology analyst and managing bureau chief, Eric Bleeker, lays out both the bull and bear cases for Apple. To get all of his latest thinking on Apple, simply

Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL ) , which ranks seventh on our list of top-performing stocks over the past decade, is one huge exception, of course. Just 10 years ago, Apple had a market cap of $5.4 billion. Today, it has the No. 1 market cap in the world, and is one of the most respected and recognizable brands around. And in just the past 10 years, the company has introduced both the iPhone and iPad, two products that have transformed our culture in countless ways.

Many of the other top stocks were indeed small and obscure, however. Eight of the companies were valued below $100 million a decade ago. And four of the companies still have market caps below $1 billion, even with the remarkable returns they were able to generate over the past decade.

that were never possible. nonfu springs? china go to a spring, bottle up water, put it in trucks to deliver to their constituents. that process was five hours. now with hana we have the transportation winning strategy. yes, it is. but now i want to one up that. tell me what you've done for nfl. i am very tield. we have a commissioner here for fantasy football. sometimes i want to wring his neck. he mcclausen, i'm sure you know, he brought in sap and we weres anxious to have it done fast. we made a series of acquisitions. sometimes they just can't call you and have it be done in a day, can they? here's the deal. the days of sold implementations have radically changed. why? because you can put it on the cloud. so many companies today are going to innovate at the edge of the enterprise for their people, their suppliers, their customers or their money. and they'll innovate on the edge of the enterprise in the cloud. or some company, small, mid size as an example and some large once will run their entire company, either a public or private cloud. the good thing about sap is we can run an entire company in the cloud or innovate at the edge of the cloud. so the days of old long, time-consuming implementations over. last side. they're waving me off. i'm not done. please go. europe is incredible strong for you. we know europe is falling off a cliff. on the one hand europe could be falling off the cliff and on the other hand very strong for you. think of it this way. if companies have less revenue they got to reset their cost base. they'll have to do more with less. software from sap will help them do that. also if you look at certain markets in europe like germany, middle east, africa, there are some parts that are really growing. and with very strong brand. if you want to grow your revenues, be mobile with your consumer, leverage the cloud for lower cost, optimize your supply chain, whatever you want to do, sap does it all. it does. normally someone might say jim you can think is what the heck? often there's a method to the market's madness. let's do some teaching. take office max. omx. smallest of the three big office supply chains. this is an industry you'd think would be in terrible shape right now. after all, office max makes the lion's share of its money selling supplies to small businesses. and we know that it's a very tough time to be a small business owner in this country. most small firms aren't expanding. they're not hiring. we're not seeing much in the way of new business creation. in part because of worries about the fiscal cliff. have entrepreneurs sitting on who wants to start a business without knowing what the capital gains tax will be, tax code rate. plus the whole office supply industry has been shrinking for awhile, not just office max but office depot andtaples as shifted away from using lots of paper towards digital solutions like apple ipads. meanwhile there's not that much demand for the technological devices some of the companies sell which have become increasingly commoditysed. just witness hideous performance of best buy. despite all these big perceived big picture, office max has been rallying like crazy. stock has run up 122% for year. and it's fallen from 4.26 from the beginning of august to nearly $10. right now where the stock is less than a point off its 52-week high. what the heck, right? five months ago this stock had been left for dead. but now somehow office max has managed to find new life and become a monster good performer. just when you expect the company to be take it on the chin. what the heck is really happening at this company? could it be that perhaps we're simply wrong about the sector? maybe that's the judgment. that the office supply business is much better than we thought? and office max is leading the charge? no no no. that's not it. we know because while competitive office depot is up 56% for the year to date an excellent move not as good as office max, staples which was once considered to b best of breed in this base is down 16% for the year. so there's no industry-wide turn. there is no rising tide lifting all office supply boats. this i a company-specific move. i think it's got two causes. expectations were incredibly low last year. office max got put through the metaphor cal meat grinder. it was horrible. falling from $17 to $4. as the company came into 2012 the ball was set very low. when the expectations are that low, even lousy results can take the stock hire as long as they aren't downright pitiful. last year sales nowhere near good. but in line with the street's expectations and not absolutely hard which was good enough to give the stock some lift at these levels. even though max has rallied this year, it climbed from $17. it still has a way to go before it's back to even. when you look at it in that context, this rally doesn't seem insane. office max has been trying to get its house in order. it announced it was reinstating its two cent per share quarterly dividend. not much. the stock yields about 1%. it also told us it was conducting a comprehensive capital allocation review. designed to simplify its balance sheet. a couple of important elements here. office max got caught up in the terrible lehman bankruptcy. they had bonds backed by lehman connected to timber assets. the courts resolved this in september. office max debt was reduced by about $735 million. big deal considering it's only an $860 million company. two weeks ago we learned about the ipo of boise cascade. what a great old name. a private company that made paper, corrugated containers, wood products and building materials bcc. used to be a big position of mine in an old hedge fund of mine. i was able to swing around a couple of them. 100 mill. office maximum owns 20% of this company. ipo will unlock hidden value by putting a hard value on that investment. office max is supporting the sale of its crocksley business in new zealand which is a wholesaler that does some manufacturing.we should hear about when the company reports its fourth quarter. impending boise cascade ipo, new zealand business became apparent office max was worth more than people had thought when they initially wrote the company off and left it for dead. investors thought this stock was a value trap. turns out it has real value. as the company had a better balance sheet than we imagined. a bunch of hidden assets. all the office supply states are shutting down. shutting their stores to reduce their footprint. too many of them. office max was ahead of the curve in this regard. they started reducing their square footage early. you probably saw some abandoned stores. in 2005 they started. way ahead of the competition. especially staples which decided to sit back and wait for its competitors to close stores in hopes that it might not have. to since office max is the smallest player in this space, about 900 stores they have less to lose than office depot. staples and office depot do business in new york. another reason why the stock's outperforming. lately there have been whispers and you go on the web, you google this thing and you're going to see it. i google it. i don't want to be a part of it but possible merger between office depot and office max. it's true that office depot and staples tried to merge in the mid 90s. justice department nixed that one. but the dynamics of the office supply system has changed a lot since the rise of the internet. i think it's more likely a dea would be allowed to happen in this base. staples buying office depot was the number one player by the number two. ixnay on that. the other merger number two player combining with the number three. justice is alwaysier on those. i never like to invest on takeover speculation. but there's no doubt office max would go higher if it happened to catch a bid. after this run office max is still cheaper than office depot or staples on an enterprise value basis. not recommending this on a takeover basis. here's the bottom line. i wouldn't recommend buying office max up here. it's just had a huge run, people. but the company's doing better than the competition. and it's balancing out to be a heck of a lot better than anyone believed six months ago. if we get a huge fiscal cliff-induced pull back i think you can feel good about pulling the trigger and taking down some office max if it were to drop a couple of points. as it turns out the value is in the better earnings stream, it could soon to follow. let's go to kelly in pennsylvania. kelly. caller: a big booyrom bucks county, pa. that's where i lived for a long time. what's going on? caller: my question is about microsystem inc. the company consistently beats analyst estimates an has had impressive double-digit revenue growth. is this a good technology play in the retail and hospitality industries? it is. you know what, this is really interesting this company. we looked at this before. i don't understand why the stock isn't doing that well. it's down for the year. let me do this. 3 billion company. we're going to do some work on this. because it is a little Superstorm Sandy: Status of Returning Electricity, Gas Shortages

The extreme weather team tracks the latest from the devastating hurricane.

Gas Lines, Gouging, and Hurricane Sandy: Keeping Prices Low Means Nobody...

Brooklyn, NY - It was mayhem yesterday afternoon at the Hess Gas Station at 4th Avenue and Union Street, where drivers waited in line for more than six hours to fill up their tanks. A separate line of customers on foot wrapped around the block inching red gas canisters up the sidewalk. The police were on the scene bringing justice to the line cutters.

Brandon Shamell, who transports handicapped customers for Countrywide, Inc., was standing off to the side observing the scene. "We're not going to be able to pick people up on Monday," says Shamell. "Gas is more important than food right now."

Lillian Rodriguez, who owns Family Car Service, spent the day in line in a battle to keep her drivers on the road. "I've been here since 6:43 [in the morning], making the line over and over again. And I will do that for as long as I can."

So why does it look 1973 all over again at gas stations throughout New York and New Jersey? Hurricane Sandy knocked power out to New Jersey's gas refineries, causing shortages throughout the region. Govs. Chris Christie and Andrew Cuomo responded by doing exactly the wrong thing: They threatened to prosecute any station owners caught raising prices, thus removing any incentive to truck more gas in from other parts of the country.

Thanks to a cadre of small businessmen, though, Brooklyn residents have an alternative to spending all day in line. One man, who asked to remain anonymous, said that he was waiting in line over and over again and then selling gas across the street from the station at a 200 percent mark-up. "A lot of people honestly don't want to wait three hours, you know? It's happening at every gas station." He estimated that about half the people in line were in the resale business.

Recently at Reason.com, Anthony Randazzo made the case for price gouging to a skeptical cabbie, Katherine Mangu-Ward explained why "surge pricing" in taxis helps provide a crucial service to a "storm-weary populace," and Nick Gillespie outlined "3 Stupid Responses to Hurricane Sandy - and Every Other Disaster You Can Remember."

10 stocks to watch today

1. Food

Stocks:Syngenta (SYT 0.00%, news) and Monsanto (MON 0.00%, news)

The United Nations calls the global food crisis a "silent tsunami." Two billion people, mostly poor, depend on fish and other wild foods for protein. Their supplies have "collapsed or are in steep decline," forcing use of costly animal proteins. The rise in food prices is making it worse for billions living below poverty levels.

In "The End of Plenty," National Geographic warns "synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and irrigation, supercharged by genetically engineered seeds" are failing. A joint World Bank/UN study concluded that the immense production increases brought about by science and technology the past 30 years have failed to improve food access for many of the world's poor. Modern techniques have led to farming that's "destructive of the soil, the environment and us," Doug Gurian-Sherman, a senior scientist with the food and environment program at the Union of Concerned Scientists, tells Time magazine.

.

2. Farmland

Funds:Ceres Partners, Chess Capital Partners

Crop soils are "being carried away by water and wind erosion at rates between 10 to 40 times the rates of soil formation," Diamond warns in "Collapse." With forests, the soil-erosion rate is "between 500 and 10,000 times" the replacement rate, he estimates -- a trend accelerated by today's 100,000-acre megafires.

Ceres and Chess are hedge funds that own many small farms.

Additional stocks mentioned in this article: Kimberly-Clark (KMB 0.00%, news), International Paper (IP 0.00%, news) and DuPont (DD 0.00%, news).

3. Forests

Stocks:Kimberly-Clark (KMB 0.00%, news) and International Paper (IP 0.00%, news).

We are destroying natural habitats and rain forests at an accelerating rate. Half the world's original forests have been converted to urban developments. A quarter of what remains will be converted in the next 50 years.

4. Chemicals

Stocks:DuPont (DD 0.00%, news), Molycorp (MCP 0.00%, news) and Dow Chemical (DOW 0.00%, news).

Our solutions often create new problems. Consider the deadly impact of insecticides, pesticides, herbicides, detergents, plastics. The list is endless. For example, industries "manufacture or release into the air, soil, oceans, lakes, and rivers many toxic chemicals" that break down slowly or not at all, Diamond writes.

Which way are the markets headed?

5. Energy

Stocks:Exxon Mobil (XOM 0.00%, news), Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.B 0.00%, news), BP (BP 0.00%, news), ConocoPhillips (COP 0.00%, news) and Alpha Natural Resources (ANR 0.00%, news).

Oil, natural gas, coal. Pimco's Bill Gross described a "significant break" in the world's "growth pattern." The world is now past the "peak oil" tipping point. Consumer shopping will decline as economic growth slows in the future and corporate profits will be static.

6. Alternative energy

Stocks:Southern (SO 0.00%, news) and Westinghouse Solar (WEST 0.00%, news).

In "Seven myths about alternative energy," the Foreign Policy asks if biofuels, solar and nuclear are the "magic ticket" before answering that they're not. And they never will be, although some diversified energy companies are well into nuclear energy.

7. Water

Investment: government monopolies

Diamond warns: "Most of the world's fresh water in rivers and lakes is already being used for irrigation, domestic and industrial water," transportation, dams, fisheries and recreation. Water problems destroyed many earlier civilizations: "Today over a million people lack access to reliable safe drinking water."

By 2015 two-thirds of the world will live in water-stressed countries. Water will trade like oil futures. More and more wars will be fought over water and other basic resources concluded a 2003 Pentagon report predicting that "warfare will define human life by 2020.

Do economics point to chaos?
.

8. Solar energy

Investment: very risky

Diamond warns that we're already using "half of the Earth's photosynthetic capacity," and will max out by midcentury. In "Plundering the Amazon," Bloomberg Markets magazine warns that Alcoa (AA 0.00%, news), Cargill and other resources giants "have bypassed laws designed to prevent destruction of the world's largest rain forest ... robbing the earth of its best shield against global warming

Top Stocks Moving the Market Today ....

That's a big reason why the Dow Jones industrials ($INDU) fell 6.4% on the week. It's why Bank of America (BAC) fell 12.7%. It's why copper (-HG) fell 16.6% and gold (-GC) fell 9.6%. And it is a big reason why futures trading early Monday suggested the Dow will open down maybe 100 points, with the S&P 500 down 10 points and the Nasdaq-100 Index ($NDX) down 25 points.

Here's what else to watch from the economy:

New home sales for August, due Monday from the Commerce Department. Don't expect any improvement from July's dismal sales rate of 285,000 units.

S&P/Case Shiller Home Price Index for July, due Tuesday, from Standard & Poor's. Look for another year-over-year price decline of maybe 4%.

The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index, due Tuesday. This is also expected to show little improvement.

Durable good orders, due Wednesday from the Commerce Department. This might offer some real cheer, according to Capital Economics, the British economic consulting firm. Defense orders are rising. So are commercial airplane orders.

Initial jobless claims, due Thursday from the Labor Department. Claims fell to 423,000 in the week ending Sept. 17. But the 4-week moving average rose to 421,000. Claims have stalled at 410,000 to 430,00 in recent weeks, likely the result of increased layoff announcements.

Second-quarter Gross Domestic Product, due Thursday from the Commerce Department. This is a revised estimate that's expected to show a small bit of improvement, from an annualized 1% to 1.3%.

Personal income and spending, due Friday from the Commerce Department. The August jobs report showed no gains in jobs. Don't expect much on the income side, either, says IHS Global Insight.

Reuters/University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index, due Friday. This is a final report. It may rise from August's reading of 55.7 to maybe 56.8, IHS says, but that will be down from the first reading of 57.8. Market turmoil will be the culprit.

Micron is the top earnings report

The week ahead is not heavy on earnings reports. The third quarter doesn't end until Friday, and earnings season only starts with Alcoa (AA) on after the close on Oct. 11.

Here are the week's key reports:

Monday: Egg-producer Cal-Maine Foods (CALM).

Tuesday: American Greetings (AM), circuit-board maker Jabil Circuit (JBL), payroll processor Paychex (PAYX) and drugstore chain Walgreen (WAG). The theme to watch is what the companies have to say about job expansion.

Wednesday: Discounter retailer Family Dollar Stores (FDO) and spice-maker McCormick & Co. (MKC).

Thursday: Semiconductor-maker Micron Technology (MU) and steel-maker Worthington Industries (WOR). Micron's results will be closely watched because it offers a look at the health of the personal computer business.
